Cutting silver out of the plastic

I bought some silver maple leafs/leaves and am considering cutting them out of the plastic. They are all 1989 and 1990 which seem to be the two highest mintage years. Is there any resale premium associated with the provenance of being the in plastic? I don't plan to sell them unless silver rockets (or goes under $5 Canadian) and storing them in the plastic sheets is not particularly convenient. I think I would feel less guilty about it if they were 2006's since these have already lived 15+ years in the plastic. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Silver tarnishes if left exposed to air. If you have some tubes to put them in (available on Ebay), they should be alright, otherwise I'd leave them sealed up.

I know what you mean, they are a pain to store and would look so much nicer out of the plastic...but only for a while. I also think they tend to have a higher resale when you sell them sealed. JMO

Yeah, I would be putting them in tubes. Personally I don't mind some tarnish since it just further validates that the coin is made out of silver, but I guess other people may care more.

All my leafs are plastic encased and that's how, they will stay. It's probably true, that they will sell easier [not tampered with]. And stay shinny.

I took mine out... did not effect the price when I sold them. I stored them in tubes.

I don't think you will take much if any hit. Just checked Apmex, you can buy one SAE for spot +$2.00 and you can buy one Silver Maple for spot + $2.00. The SAE won't be wrapped or in a tube, vinyl plastic coin holder probably.

Place a lot of the coins that are sealed in the original RCM plastic on a table beside a lot that no long have the plastic and I'll pick the sealed ones every time.

The plastic is a bummer to store but that original mint seal could go a long way to increase liquidity down the road.

Many people will pay a preium for mint sealed ones in plastic. I would keep them that way.

Unless you're saving those not so old or rare coins for a time capsule who cares ?

It's just stinking silver, buy it, stack it away and don't worry about it.

When the metals go boom (paper traders run for collateral cover) it won't make a bloody diff ....

Keep 'em in the sheets. The coins start wearing and picking up contaminants the moment they're taken out. My experience is that unsealed/repackaged coins carry less sense of aesthetic 'freshness' for new buyers at coin shows. There's something gross about buying a dirty old 'naked' coin from some guy who pulls it from who knows where. It's like the candy bowl at a restaurant. Ewwww. :puke:
